Shooting Drills to Run on the Basketball Court

Shooting Drills for the Basketball Court

Everyone wants an edge when they step on the basketball court. But there’s no secret to becoming a better player. Practice makes perfect is an old adage, but there’s a lot of truth to it. This is especially the case when it comes to improving your shooting skills.

A good routine will ensure that your shot will slowly but steadily improve and become more consistent. Today in the Rocky Mount Event Center blog, we’ll break down some shooting drills to help you be a better player on the basketball court.

Form Practice

This may be boring, but practicing your form is the absolute best way to become a better shooter. If you don’t have consistent form, you won’t consistently make your shots. Start by shooting one-handed with your shooting hand. This will help you get your release down.

After doing the one-handed shooting drill for a while, switch to one-handed shooting with your guide hand near the ball. Finally, after running that drill, go ahead and shoot with your guide hand on the ball, and practice your shot. Getting the motion down is important, and this is a good way to do it.

Around the World

Next, run a drill where you’ll have to shoot on various points of the basketball court. Still focusing on form, shoot from places like the free throw line, the post, and the three-point line. Shoot from each spot 10 times before moving on to the next spot. This will help you work on your form while taking shots from everywhere on the basketball court.

Off the Dribble Drills

Now you want to run some drills that will simulate in-game situations. Run some off-the-dribble drills so you can get some practice having to shoot off the dribble. This will also help you practice handling the ball at the same time. A good shooter can shoot in a variety of situations, so this will definitely help you prepare for the basketball court.

Catch and Shoot Drills

You’ll need someone to help you with these drills. Have someone pass you the basketball, square up, and shoot right off the pass. The point of these drills is to help you quickly get a shot off when you have an open look off the pass. Make sure to shoot from various different areas of the basketball court.
