University of Kansas men’s basketball fans have a lot to cheer about. The Jayhawks are one of the top programs in college basketball. The program has won three NCAA national tournament championships. KU also has one of the loudest indoor sports facilities in the world. On Feb. 13, 2017, KU fans erupted to create 130.4 decibels of sound during one of the team’s many victories. For comparison, a thunderclap is 120 decibels and a military jet taking off from an aircraft carrier is 130 decibels.
Oldest Indoor Sports Facility Still in Use
The oldest indoor sports facility still in use in the world is Matthews Arena in Boston, Massachusetts. It was built in 1910, and it hosted ice shows. On Dec. 1, 1924, the Boston Bruins played their first-ever NHL regular-season game at the indoor sports facility. Several area colleges and universities also played at Matthews Arena. Today, the venue hosts Northeastern University athletics, including men’s basketball as well as men’s and women’s hockey.
Largest Indoor Sports Facilities
The record for the largest indoor sports facility in the world comes in two forms: by size and by capacity.
In terms of the most people who can fit into an indoor sports facility, that record belongs to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The stadium hosts the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL, and it seats 80,000 people for home games. The capacity is expandable to 105,000 for certain events.
For size, nothing compares to National Stadium in Singapore. The diameter of the dome is 310 meters or a whopping 1,017 feet. This is 35 meters (115 feet) greater than AT&T Stadium. The retractable roof takes 25 minutes to open or close. The stadium hosts track & field events as well as matches for rugby, cricket, and soccer.
