5 Tips for Good Sportsmanship at a Basketball Tournament

Sportsmanship is a vital aspect of any basketball tournament. Today, the Rocky Mount Event Center team discusses five rules to good sportsmanship during a tournament.

Don’t Use Hate Speech

Not using hate speech is a rule that you should follow both on and off the court. Basketball tournaments do not tolerate any form of derogatory names, slurs, or abusive speech. Every person, whether a fan at a basketball tournament or someone you come across in your day-to-day life, is deserving of the everyday courtesy that you would want from others. To speak kindly, especially when frustrated and annoyed, is the best act of sportsmanship you can do.

Encourage Without Tearing Others Down

Competition can get intense — anyone who has participated in a basketball tournament is familiar with that. Intensity does not permit a person to tear down other people in order to build someone else up. Good sportsmanship means taking the time to think about how your words — even words said in the heat of a big play — can have lasting effects on a person long after the game ends.

Respect the Other Players and Fans

Good sportsmanship is all about respect. Competition is fun and exciting, but at the end of the day, we are all people. Regardless of rivalries and current experiences, players and fans on both sides should be treated with respect and should treat others with respect.

Treat the Facilities Well

It is important to treat the facility that holds the basketball tournament with respect. Take the time to pick up any trash, even if it isn’t yours. Don’t intentionally damage any of the equipment. Also, report any maintenance issues to a member of the facility staff as soon as possible to prevent potential accidents.

Don’t Be a Sore Loser (or a Sore Winner)

We all know the old saying “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” However, we also know that that isn’t always the case. Winning is a big part of why you play a sport like basketball. But being a sore loser or a sore winner is a poor way to behave. Whether you win or lose, be respectful to the other team.
