While classical music may seem like something from a bygone era, modern classical concerts are still a very exciting and important part of musical culture. If you’re thinking about attending a classical concert, read on for some etiquette tips to follow when you arrive.
Dress Appropriately
There are expected dress codes at an opera or orchestra concert that differ from your average rock concert. When attending a formal concert, try to dress along the lines of business casual. While a simple t-shirt and shorts may be comfortable, for classical concerts a little formality is more appropriate.
Cell Phones
Before the show starts, make sure to silence your cell phone to prevent any interruptions during the performance. If your cell phone rings or makes any noise, you may be given a warning or asked to leave the event. A simple solution is to turn your cell phone off when you enter the concert venue and leave it off until the performance is over.
Arriving On Time
Always arrive several minutes early before a performance to secure your seat and get ready to watch the show. Some venues may not allow late guests in and may deny you from seeing the show. Arriving 10-15 minutes before the production begins ensures that you’ll have plenty of time to find your seat, get your snacks, and enjoy the performance.
Avoid Making Noise
In such a large space, noise can travel quickly and echo throughout the entire room. Excessive movement or sound in the concert venue could distract the audience and performance members. If you have to cough or make a noise, try to do it as discreetly as possible to be courteous to others.
Clapping
With a classical concert, it can be hard to tell when to give the final applause since there are many symphonic pauses during orchestra performances. The tradition is to clap at the very end of the entire production. If you can’t tell when that is, follow along with the program booklet or wait until more audience members start to clap.
