Respect the Refs
At any volleyball tournament, referees are going to make a few bad calls. While you can voice your opinion, it’s important to do so respectfully. The referees have the authority to call a game how they see fit. As players, coaches, and fans, treating the referees respectfully — even when they make an incorrect call — is an essential tenet of good sportsmanship.
Don’t Get Caught Up in the Heat of the Moment
With volleyball tournaments, adrenaline is running high throughout the event. However, that doesn’t mean you can get caught up in the moment and say something that you wouldn’t otherwise say. You are in control of your actions. Good sportsmanship means getting involved in the games while keeping in mind that the other players and fans are still people who have lives outside of volleyball.
Be Kind to the Other Players and Fans
Like we mentioned above, the people involved with a volleyball tournament are just that, people! Words and actions done in the moment can have lasting effects on a person long after the tournament is complete. A good sport takes a second to make sure their words and actions are kind and respectful, even if they are angry or frustrated.
Take Care of the Facilities
Respect and good sportsmanship go beyond just the people at the volleyball tournament — it also should include the facilities where the tournament is taking place. Pick up trash, don’t intentionally damage anything, and report any issues to the staff to prevent people from getting injured.
Win and Lose Well
Winning and losing go hand in hand with participating in a volleyball tournament. Unfortunately, some people don’t take losing — or winning, in some instances — as well as they can. Be a good sport! If you win, win with grace. If you lose, lose with dignity. In the end, it’s just a game. You are all there to have fun and participate in a sport that you love. Don’t be a sore loser or a sore winner. Just enjoy the tournament!
