Why Sensory Inclusive?
Rocky Mount Event Center wants everyone to be able to enjoy our facility. Our staff strives to raise awareness of the needs and challenges faced by people who have sensory processing disorders. We continually train our team members to understand sensory processing issues and how we can make these guests feel welcome.
We’ve partnered with KultureCity, one of the leading nonprofits in the United States, whose goal is to make the world inclusive for people with sensory processing disorders.
Sensory Bags
Guests with sensory processing challenges can pick up sensory bags at the guest services booth of Rocky Mount Event Center. These bags include several resources for adults and children.
- ID card on a lanyard that says KCVIP
- Marble fidget toy
- Noodle fidget toy
- Tangle fidget toy
- Noise-canceling headphones with the KC logo on the side
These items are provided to you free of charge by leaving an ID at the front desk.
Weighted Lap Pads
Weighted lap pads are also available for free at the Rocky Mount Event Center guest services booth when you leave an ID. The idea behind a weighted lap pad goes back to the psychology of childhood. Kids love to be hugged by a parent. And that physical squeezing sensation can provide a measure of comfort for someone with sensory challenges.
A weighted lap pad covers the thighs and knees, and it’s almost like a heating pad or small blanket with thin weights sewn in between both sides of it. The weighted lap pad forms a perfect surface for laying out activities, papers, or a mobile device.
All-Inclusive App
KultureCity also has its All-Inclusive app for you to download to an Android or Apple smartphone or mobile device. The app showcases locations certified as sensory inclusive by KultureCity. It also lets you connect with other families who have tips and tricks for sensory inclusion.
