What Age Are You Building For?
What age are you building the monster truck course for? Toddlers might do well with a tabletop design, while kids ages 6 to 9 might enjoy a larger version in your yard (if you have the space). Remote-controlled monster trucks are fun for everyone!
Floor or Tabletop Tracks
Tabletop versions work well because they create a dedicated space for your youngster to play, much like when you set up a model racetrack or train set. For the track itself, you can use modeling clay or specialty play dirt. These products can be expensive, but there are other options that are more affordable.
You can convert playsets with roads into a monster truck course. Use play rocks, dirt, and obstacles for your trucks. This setup works best for toddlers.
Consider using plywood for the base of the monster truck course for older kids. Build ramps out of cardboard and bumps out of cans. Then get out the spray foam insulation. The spray foam fills in the gaps between the obstacles and plywood base. It also creates a cohesive look. Once the spray foam cures, use spray paint to turn it brown, green, or whatever colors you want. You’ll want to construct this outside of the house, like in the yard or a garage, because of the odors involved. Once the paint dries, it’s time for your kids to enjoy!
Backyard
You’ve probably seen the real-life mini monster trucks that allow your kids to ride them in the yard. What’s the fun in riding a monster truck if there’s no course to ride them on?
This design requires lots of wide-open space. Design the course on paper, then get ready for some dirt mounds. Pile up the dirt along the course for the bumps and ramps. You’ll want to make the rises gradual, so there aren’t too many drastic bumps or spills. For obstacles, consider tree branches, plastic toys, outdoor items, and other things you don’t mind getting dirty.
There’s another option for backyard monster truck tracks. Remote controlled trucks are fun for hobbyists of all ages. Pick out a corner of your yard, build up the sand, and pack it down with water. Shape mounds with old tires, large cans, metal ramps, and plastic tubs. Consider laying down a plastic tarp first before laying the sand. The bigger the area, the more sand bags you’ll need. Remote-controlled monster trucks are fun and safe for all ages!
