AAU Indoor Volleyball Age & Membership Requirements
All players and staff from teams playing in an AAU-sanctioned tournament must be registered with AAU. Age requirements state that a player must not turn older than the listed age before July 1, 2023. For example, if a player is 15 years old but turns 16 before July, they will play 16U.
Volleyball Tournament Formats
This spring, most competitive tournaments will feature a 2-day format: Saturdays for pool (or group) play and Sundays for bracket play. In pool play, smaller groups of 3-4 teams compete in a round-robin to set the seedings for elimination bracket play on Sunday.
Double Elimination Modern Crossover is another popular format and is the one used by the AVP. This format is similar to a classic double-elimination tournament: two losses and you’re out until the semifinals. The “crossover” happens as the 2 remaining teams from the winner’s bracket cross over to face the remaining teams from the consolation side, and the semifinals conclude with win-or-go-home drama.
Volleyball Tournament Parent/Spectator Code
Nearly all tournaments operate under the rules set forth by USA Volleyball. These rules extend beyond the court boundaries to the stands, where parents and spectators help create positive experiences. The USAV has set forth a code of conduct for spectators. Failure to adhere can result in expulsion from events.
